The Music Publishers’ Association of Iceland (MPA Iceland) has joined the International Confederation of Music Publishers (ICMP), which represents the international interests of the music publishing community. The ICMP, which includes majors, indies, and 76 national trade associations across six continents, defends the rights behind approximately 90% of the world’s commercially released music, including over 160 million tracks of every genre. MPA Iceland, which collectively represents the publishing sector in Iceland’s music market, becomes the 80th national group among ICMP’s network. Inga Magnes Weisshappel, MPA member and Publishing Manager at Wise Music Group in Iceland, expressed her gratitude for being invited to join the ICMP family and looking forward to working with colleagues around the world to learn more about systems and structures in other territories and offer their input on the key opportunities and challenges facing the international music publishing industry.
The expansion comes just over a week after the ICMP released its first-ever analysis of global music publishing, surveying 16 major music markets. The countries surveyed included nine of the top 10 music markets, as determined by IFPI in its recorded music report for 2024, as well as seven countries that fell short of the top 10 – Australia, Brazil, Italy, the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, and Sweden – as well as Hong Kong. The report found that music publishing brings in a little over $11 billion annually in those markets.
