Tiny Desk, Big Moves: Sonali Mehta Tapped as NPR Music’s New Executive Director

A New Chapter for NPR Music

NPR has appointed Sonali Mehta as the new Executive Director of NPR Music, effective September 22. Based in New York, Mehta will lead strategy, innovation, and growth for NPR’s music initiatives, including its widely celebrated Tiny Desk franchise. Her appointment marks a pivotal moment as NPR strengthens its role in shaping music culture and amplifying diverse voices.

Driving Strategy and Innovation

In her new role, Mehta will oversee the overall vision for NPR Music, collaborate with NPR’s extensive network of music stations, and guide the evolution of platforms like Tiny Desk. Known for spotlighting rising talent, the franchise has become a cultural force in music discovery.

“NPR’s music properties, and the people behind them, serve as a masterclass in moving culture and breaking artists,” Mehta said. “As a fan of platforms like Tiny Desk, I am so excited to be in the room where it happens. I very much look forward to supporting the growth of these beloved, culture-defining franchises.”

A Career Rooted in Artist Advocacy

Mehta brings over a decade of experience in the music industry. She began her career at YouTube, working with more than 800 artists to shape release strategies, grow audiences, and launch internal programs for creators. At Arista Records, she executed over 50 global campaigns focused on artist discovery and consumption.

Most recently, she served as Chief of Staff at ADA, part of Warner Music Group, where she focused on business development, content strategy, and partnerships. Her track record highlights a consistent commitment to advocating for artists while pushing innovative approaches to music distribution and audience engagement.

NPR’s Commitment to Music and Culture

NPR emphasized that Mehta’s expertise aligns with its mission to foster a more informed and culturally enriched public. With Tiny Desk cemented as a platform that can catapult emerging artists into the spotlight, NPR Music is positioned to expand its influence globally.

NPR’s broader mission remains clear: to deliver rigorous reporting and storytelling across radio, digital platforms, and live events. Its music division continues to be a central part of how the organization connects with millions of listeners and fans.

Looking Ahead

Mehta’s appointment signals NPR’s ambition to grow its cultural impact in the music space while continuing to champion artists and audiences alike. For NPR Music, the combination of a fresh leader with deep industry expertise and a commitment to artist advocacy could mean a transformative new era.

The real question now is how NPR Music under Mehta’s leadership will evolve to meet the changing ways people discover and consume music. If history is any guide, the answer is likely to keep NPR at the forefront of both innovation and influence in the industry.
